**Lesson Plan: Cultural and Creative Arts**
**Grade Level:** Junior Secondary 2
**Subject:** Cultural and Creative Arts
**Topic:** Intervals
**Duration:** 60 minutes
**Objective:** By the end of the lesson, students will be able to define musical intervals, identify different types of intervals, and demonstrate the ability to recognize and sing major and minor intervals.
### Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Piano or keyboard (optional)
- Audio samples of various intervals
- Flashcards with intervals
- Handouts with interval charts
- Online resources/projector for visual presentations
### Lesson Structure:
#### Introduction (10 minutes)
1. **Welcome and Warm-up:**
- Greet the students and have them do a vocal warm-up exercise (e.g., simple scales, humming exercises).
2. **Introduction to Topic:**
- Write the word "Intervals" on the board.
- Ask students if anyone knows what a musical interval is.
- Define an interval as the distance between two notes in music.
#### Direct Instruction (20 minutes)
1. **Types of Intervals:**
- Explain that intervals can be melodic (notes played in sequence) or harmonic (notes played simultaneously).
- Discuss the different types of intervals:
- Unison, Minor Second, Major Second
- Minor Third, Major Third
- Perfect Fourth, Tritone, Perfect Fifth
- Minor Sixth, Major Sixth
- Minor Seventh, Major Seventh
- Perfect Octave
2. **Visual and Audio Examples:**
- Use the keyboard or audio samples to demonstrate each type of interval.
- Play each interval for the class and have them write down what they hear.
#### Guided Practice (15 minutes)
1. **Interval Identification Activity:**
- Distribute flashcards with musical notes for interval identification.
- Play an interval on the keyboard or through an audio sample.
- Have students identify the interval and show the corresponding flashcard.
2. **Sing-Along:**
- Lead the class in singing the intervals out loud.
- Start with simple ones like the major second and major third, then move to more complex intervals.
#### Independent Practice (10 minutes)
- **Worksheet Activity:**
- Hand out interval chart worksheets.
- Have students fill in the intervals between given notes.
- Students should identify if the interval is minor, major, perfect, etc.
#### Conclusion (5 minutes)
1. **Review:**
- Summarize the key points of the lesson.
- Ask students to recap what they've learned about intervals.
2. **Q&A:**
- Allow time for any questions from students.
3. **Homework:**
- Assign a brief homework task: Have students listen to a favorite song and identify at least three intervals within it.
### Assessment:
- Participation in vocal warm-up and singing activities.
- Accuracy in identifying intervals during the guided practice.
- Completion and correctness of worksheet activities.
### Differentiation:
- For advanced learners: Provide more complex interval exercises involving compound intervals.
- For struggling students: Offer additional one-on-one practice or simpler interval identification tasks.
By the end of this lesson, students should have a clear understanding of what musical intervals are, be able to identify them by ear, and sing them confidently.
